ALTERNATIVE PROVISION
A different route, with clear purpose
Alternative Provision may support learners who need a smaller, calmer or differently structured route. Suitability depends on referral information, assessment, funding and capacity.
Who it may support
Unable to access their current school placement
Support may be suitable where a learner is currently unable to attend or engage successfully with their existing school placement.
At risk of exclusion or needing re-engagement
A structured alternative may help learners rebuild engagement, routine and confidence before the situation escalates further.
Experiencing anxiety or school avoidance
A smaller, more flexible learning environment can help reduce barriers and support a gradual return to consistent education.
Needing a smaller or calmer setting
Some learners benefit from a lower-stimulation environment with more individual attention and a clearer daily structure.
Requiring post-16 GCSE or Functional Skills progression
Support can help learners continue towards GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications while working at an appropriate pace.
Needing short-term assessment or a supported return to learning
Short-term provision can provide space to assess needs, rebuild routines and plan a supported next step back into education.
Programme design
A programme may combine English, Maths, Science, ICT, Functional Skills, life skills, careers, supported study and pastoral work. The exact offer is based on referral information, assessment, funding and capacity.
Referral, outcomes and review
WINA agrees intended outcomes, attendance, reporting and review arrangements with the family and commissioner. Progress should be reviewed regularly and provision adjusted where appropriate.
